Drought Tolerant Gardens Begin With Native Plants
Is this what you think of when you think about putting in a garden in the heat of the southern Texas? You can't get much more native than this!
But this doesn't have to be the limitation of living in a drought-stricken and very hot area. You just need to be a bit more creative in the plants that you pick.
And before you think that drought has limited you to cactus, or even worse, lots of rocks, take a look at our Blog area. We will be covering subjects like the drought and xeriscaping, but with a nod to those of you who are in love with lush English gardens full of scent, color, and texture (not the ouch kind).
We're also going to be covering those cute little mammals that love to eat everything on your plant list, or better known to them as "deer candy." With direct experience of plants and the deer that leap over the fence, we're going to build a garden together that will weather both the heat and the animals.
Stay tuned!

Getting The Plant You Need?
After two years of planting the native plants that I could get my hands on, it began to be pretty clear that taking a list to the local greenhouses wasn't going to get me much of what was needed. Native plants don't bloom year round, or even a full season, so they aren't the most popular plants to garden with. And the plants that were available to me were "deer candy" that encouraged the deer to jump over the fence and demolish an entire week's work in a single evening.
The plant list narrowed.
The plants that were able to survive the deer taking a tour of the garden thrived! Even in the heat and drought, those plants that managed in the conditions I was exposing them to taught me a lot about spacing and height in addition to what was on the tag. Everything changes in YOUR garden, and we're going to continue to learn and grow together.
